Dear neighbors,

I hope you are doing well despite some bizarre weather recently. On my walk home from work yesterday I encountered some of our neighbors' trees filled with lovely pink flowers, which have come out early due to the weather.

The focus of this email is to let you know about a few events going on around an in our neighborhood over the coming weeks.

TranspoBINGO 2023

TranspoBINGO is an annual public and active transportation challenge. Its purpose is to help us think actively about how we get around our city, including via MetroRail, bus, walking, biking, mobility device, scooter, and other methods. I loved doing TranspoBINGO last year - it helped get me out of the house on some cold days, and inspired me to visit some DC historical sites that I had not visited before. It also helped me think about how our city can make public and active transportation even better.

The duration of the challenge is from yesterday, Thursday February 16, through next Thursday February 23. There is a celebration at metrobar on Thursday February 23 that all are welcome to as well.

You can read more about TranspoBINGO and download the bingo card here. If you are on Twitter or other social media, feel free to upload your bingo card as you fill it out, tagging #transpoBINGO so others in the challenge can find you! You can also RSVP to the celebration on Thursday February 23 at metrobar here.

Community cleanup at Banneker rec center

On Monday, February 20 at 10am, Commissioners Josh Jacobson (1E06), Billy Easley (1A10), and I are hosting a community cleanup focusing on the area immediately around Banneker rec center. I love our rec and health centers, and I’ve taken classes at Banneker before - I’m sure many of our neighbors have taken advantage of its pool too.

If you are interested in helping clean up, join us at the parking lot, near 2505 9th St NW. Tools and gloves will be provided.

RSVPs are encouraged but not required. Commissioner Josh Jacobson will be bringing homemade scones, and I can definitely vouch for their quality!

Neighborhood public safety walk

The 3rd District of MPD Citizens Advisory Council (3DCAC) hosts walks throughout the territory covered by MPD’s 3rd District monthly, to get community feedback on public safety related issues in our area. These are generally the third Tuesday of each month. On Tuesday February 21 at 1pm, the 3DCAC walk covering Public Safety Areas 303 and 304 (which include our part of the neighborhood) will start at 14th and Girard NW. If you are interested in attending, the 3DCAC Chairwoman asks that you RSVP via email: 3DCACDC@gmail.com . I will be attending this event, as well as MPD officers. Other invitees include representatives from the Mayor's Office on Community Relations, the office of Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau, and the Office of Unified Communication (911/311). If you’re free then, it would be great to see you there!

3DCAC Public Safety Community Meeting

3DCAC also holds monthly meetings with our neighborhoods the final Thursday of each month. This month that means Thursday February 23 at 7pm at 1620 V St. NW (3rd District of MPD office) This meeting will cover discussion regarding the entire 3rd District service area and is an opportunity to bring up concerns to MPD that may be higher scale than what a neighborhood walk would usually cover, although specific street by street questions may be in order here too. You can find more information, including the meeting agenda, on the 3DCAC website.

Neighborhood rat walk

On Saturday March 4 at 10am, the head of the DC Department of Health Rodent and Vector Control team will join me and, hopefully, you, for a rodent-focused walk around our neighborhood. We’ll meet up at the corner of 13th and Clifton by Cardozo Education Campus, then walk around the neighborhood pointing out areas of recurring rodent activity, and learning how we can all contribute to reducing unwanted rodent encounters. RSVPs are encouraged but not required

I had previously invited representatives from both the Department of Public Works and the Department of Health to the February 4 walk. While our Department of Public Works representative attended (and I hope our neighbors who attended found it useful!) our Department of Health representative had to reschedule. I’m glad that we were able to reschedule this quickly, and I’m looking forward to meeting with all of you and with the DOH team!
